Creator God, you who
brought into being not just the earth, but the cosmos and all that is,
we celebrate the glorious diversity of our world.
Like the warp and woof of a beautiful tapestry, it intersects in
amazing complexity of shapes, traditions and colors--people of various
hues, black, brown, white, yellow and red; of different faiths, Jew,
Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Sufi and Baha’i; of
different sex and orientation, male and female, gay, straight,
bi-sexual, lesbian and transgender; and a whole range in political
philosophy, Republican, Democrat, Green, Libertarian, Socialist.
We look at this great span
of humanity in all its glorious complexities and wonder, did you really
intend for it to be like this? If
this indeed is your creation, then Lord, let its diversity be a lesson
to us of your intention, that we learn to live together in harmony
according to the vision of Isaiah, that…
wolf shall live with the lamb,
the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
and a little child shall lead them.
May we not just
tolerate this incredible diversity, but celebrate it as your gift by
valuing each of us as we are, accepting one another for who we are,
whether wolves or lambs, calves or lions.
Lord, we know how difficult it is to convince a Democrat to vote
like a Republican or a Republican to think like a Democrat, how much
greater then the folly of trying to make a Jew be, act or live as a
Christian, a Native American as a European American or a homosexual as a
heterosexual. Instead Lord,
may we affirm the inalienable rights of each person to life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness, working together for the common good of all
and basic fairness for every Oregonian, honoring this great diversity as
the beauty of your creation.
Bless and guide our
legislators entrusted with this task this day and throughout this
session with your wisdom. May
their words be true, their thoughts peaceful and their deeds honorable.
In the name of the Holy One, Amen.
