High School Youth Ministry
High
School Youth ministry is event based throughout the year as we remain
flexible and responsive to the needs and schedules of our youth.
Highlights during year include:
Spiritual Formation:
For those interested in deepening their faith, a number of opportunities
are planned. These include individual spiritual direction with a trained
spiritual director, small groups which experience a variety of prayer
practices and ways to read and reflect upon the Scriptures. Sabbaths and
prayer retreats are also held.
A Christian Education Class begins
for high school youth on September 9th at 11:00 a.m. John Hazen,
Robin Cushman, and Eliza Drummond are co-teaching the class.
Local Events:
Fireside Chat is an evening of dinner and discussion in homes of
church members. Discussions focus on a faith question and are facilitated
by an ordained minister from the congregation.
Youth Sunday: Each year our
youth plan and lead worship in both services. They prepare and lead every
aspect of worship including the music, prayers and sermon as well as
greeting members, preparing and serving communion and taking the offering.
Overnight Lock Ins: These events
focus upon a theme and include an activity, discussion, worship and
reflection, large group games, free time and our famous Pig in the Pen - a
hide and seek game loved by all youth.
Special Events: These events
include miniature golf, movies, ice skating, hiking, camping, Splash, a
day trip to the beach or the mountains.
Regional Events:
River Rally is hosted by our youth for approximately 80 youth from
around the region over Labor Day weekend. Our group plans the entire event
including the menu, snacks, theme for the keynote speaker and lead the
small group discussions and three worship services.
Other events we attend include the Fall
Celebration in Forest Grove in October, the annual January Snow
Rally in Hood River, the Silverton Prom in February and the Regional
Assembly which happens in April.
Mission Projects:
Mission to Mexico is our main service project. We do a number of
fund raising events throughout the year in order to send a group of youth
and adults to Mexico. There they build homes for homeless families and
conduct a Vacation Bible School for the children at the orphanage over
Spring Break. Other local mission projects have included the Helping Hands
Room, Toys for Love and working in the community gardens.
Summer Camp:
Another highlight for our youth is our regional Summer Camp at Camp White
Branch in August.
