Devotional for the Second Week of Lent, beginning Sunday, March 8

In  Blackwater Woods

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away
the blue shoulders

of the ponds, and
every pond, no
matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year,
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things;
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go.
to let it go.

– Mary Oliver

Try this Spiritual Practice:

This week begin each day by lighting a candle, praying “God of grace, help me love what is mortal. Help me hold onto what needs to be embraced, let go of what needs to be let go — and have the wisdom to know the difference.”

More light:

Reach OUT to someone living an “all in” life of service, and thank them for their commitment and inspiration. Schedule a lunch or a cup of coffee to learn more about their work and how you can help.

Lent is a 40-day period before Easter that commemorates the time Jesus spent in the wilderness. In the early church, this was a time of preparation for those about to be baptized. Today it is more often regarded as a season of soul searching and repentance for all Christians when we prepare for the joy and celebration of Easter by giving ourselves an annual spiritual check up. This period begins with Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday.

Every Easter we fill the sanctuary with beautiful lilies purchased by our members in honor of their loved ones. After Easter Sunday you may bring them home. Turn in the order form on Sundays or in the office M-F 9-4.

On Easter Sunday, we encourage every guest and member to bring a flower from your garden or local florist to help transform the cross from a symbol of death into a symbol of life. Members often bring extras for new visitors. Please join us for Easter Worship at 9 am and 11:15 am.
